Institutional theory provides an alternative account of the spread of science and its organizational forms. But two features of current scholarship may prove more significant in the long run. First, extreme diversity exists among developing areas in terms of their economic, social, and cultural patterns. At the turn of the millennium there has been a major growth of interest in institutional theory and institutional analysis in political science.
